OLA!

I started blogging about some years ago. I tried very hard to blog about myself and it often came out with nothing! Of course there were a lot of stuff going on in my life but I was worried it would be misinterpreted if I put it online and god knows who might read it! Now food is a different thing. It's almost like a universal language everybody can relate to and it's much easier for me to make people understand. Since 2009, I've been posting pictures of food I've tried and giving my personal views on them. Just a reminder - I'm neither a certified food critic or a professional photographer (I've yet to own an DSLR and most of my pics are shot from my mobile phone). I'm just an aspiring foodie and I'm here to share my thoughts on the food I've tasted. No puns intended.

SUGAR RUSH!

Oooh! It's nice to get back to my lappy! Let's just say I was suffering from a "blogger's block". Embarrassingly, it's also known as LAZINESS! Well, I'm back to normal now. I've actually managed to kick my head hard and get back to my blogging. I mean, what's the point of going to all the wonderful places to eat and painstakingly taking all the shots of the food that I ate and all the while being stared by other people who must be thinking that I'm some kind of a nut job. No, I'm not going to store all the pics at the back of my hard drive and waste all of my efforts! I'm going to BLOG NOW!

I've always been a big fan of waffles. Give me toasty, crispy waffles any time of the day and I'll gladly have it. So when I chanced upon Geláre on a Tuesday evening and on top of that, they have a 50% off on their waffles on every Tuesday, what's there to think twice?

Regular Waffle with 3 scoops of ice-cream - $12.70

As you can see here, I've chosen three flavours of ice-cream and maple syrup for my toppings. My favourite flavour is of course - MOCHA! Surprisingly, the Swiss Chocolate Caramel is also a winner on my tastebuds. Instead of choosing chocolate sauce, I decided to opt for the maple syrup instead, if not, there would be too much chocolate going on, right? Verdict for the waffle - not as crispy as I had anticipated. Overall, it was good enough to surpass my waffle craving.

Laurent Bernard Chocolatier

When I think of desserts, it's not just in black or white. I often think of them in 4 dimensional! After I'm done with Googling facts about them, I'll picture myself sitting down with a spoonful of whatever I might have in mind on that day. Than, I'll imagine swallowing the dessert and the sensational taste hitting my tastebuds. Sometimes, it seems so real, I thought I AM EATING the dessert! Hahaa...!

And that is why I was so, so, so, esctatic when I finally got to try out at Laurent Bernard's! I was day- dreaming of their desserts for months! Imagine the agony...

Crispy Chocolate Tarte - $6.80

I swear, this is the BEST CHOCOLATE TART that I've ever tasted...haaa...imagine biting into crunchy hazelnut goodness that seems to make you crave for more! Totally addictive! This is definitely one of the "I must haves" on my next visit to LB.


 Waffle - $9.80
As an avid waffle fan, Max Brenner's waffle still hold its title...The chocolate saiuce was great though. Enough said.

Flor Patisserie

Having read so many great reviews and salivating (unconciously most of the time) over Flor's cakes for so long, I've finally reached the pinnacle of my obsession! So, on that particular scorching Saturday, I did a lot of map reading, got in the train, lost my way, took a cab and finally discovered that FP is only about 15-20 minutes walk away from my workplace! When I got there, I was quite surprised that the shop was a bit cramped and the weekend crowd was not helping the situation at all. Nevertheless, nothing could stop me even if I had to shed blood, sweat and tears because it was WORTH IT!


Classic Choco -  $6.20

The Japanese are so creative that they're able to interpret anything form their Western / European counterparts into their own version but with more finesse and creativity and to me, Chef Yamashita from Flor Patisserie is all about that. Take this chocolate cake for example. It has its own uniqueness. I can't put my finger on it but to me, the taste is definitely not the same as any other chocolate cakes I've tasted. It's soft yet moist and unlike any other typical chocolate cakes, I actually didn't feel guilty about having this one because it was so light. 

Berry Berries -  $5.50

Aaahh, imagine sinking your teeth into fresh strawberries+berries accompanied with fresh cream which is so delicious and finally biting into the soft, soft spongey goodness of a cake! No wonder FP is reputed to sell the best strawberry shortcakes in Singapore! Go try it!

Cedele

When it comes to Cedele, one thing pops in my mind and that is - their delicious array of cakes. Little did I know that they have ice-creams too! Like their cakes, Cedele's ice-creams are also catered to the health-concious and vegetarians alike. They're eggless and made without using any trans fat and they come with a variety of interesting flavours.

Their ice-creams are labelled under the name Cloud 9. A mini tub such as this one costs $3.50. It's a bit pricey but not till you compare it with Haagen-Dazs or Ben & Jerry's. Actually, I'm a fan of anything that's cappuccino but when JJ picked this flavour, I had my doubts because there were almonds added in as well. I mean, who drinks cappuccino with almonds? NO, not me! I was sure it was going to taste weird. Surprisingly, it did not and once again cappuccino TRIUMPHS!

Cappuccino Almond - $3.50
By the way, don't be mistaken about the 'mouldy' patches you see on the ice-cream because that was just the frozen part. The ice-cream was just fine (sometimes my camera creates unnecessary effects!). Infact, I was quite taken away by the taste!
This was my choice. Funny thing is, I'm not even a fan of earl grey tea! Yeah, I know...mine's even weirder than JJ's. Earl grey and fig? What was I thinking? I was wrong about the taste obviously. It was WIERD but in a good kind of way. All it needed was a bit of time to settle on my tastebuds. Hmmm, like a pair of new shoes, it needs some to expand before you can feel the comfort when wearing them.  When I first tasted this ice-cream, the strong taste of earl grey really hit me but after a few scoops, I started telling myself,  "Hmmm...not bad!". The blend of flavours are definitely wierd but it creates a unique taste that you'll hardly find in your nearest supermarket.
This is how the Earl Grey Fig looks like. However, the bits of fig are too small to be seen here. Price is also similar to the Cappuccino Almond.

Wendy's

At times, I can be a good mom and sometimes I'm just the opposite of that. Normally on Sundays, I have a few tasks that need to be done in this order -  no.1: breakfast. no.2: laundry. no.3: vacuuming+mopping+cleaning the loos+folding the laundry...in fact, no.3 will never end until Sunday is over.

 This morning, however, I didn't wake up early enough for my Sunday early morning jog and it's very crucial for me right now NOT to miss my S.e.m.j. That's because I'll be running a half marathon in 3 weeks time! Well, since I've ruined that, it totally demoralized me from doing all the other things that I've laid out for the rest of the day. Now, I've stepped from the GOOD MOM territory and I'm moving over to the darker side and do you know what that means? It means, breakfast - biscuits only (Sorry Baby S, Mama will fix you a nice lunch okie!), laundry - not to be done until 4 or 5pm and the rest of the chores - FORGET ABOUT IT! I'll get them done but I'm taking my own time OK.

Anyway, I'm here right now, sitting infront of my lappy, typing away and this act itself is very, very devious. Infact,the impact can be more damaging than missing my Sunday jog. Trust me, when I'm blogging, time simply fades away. By the time I'm done, my spine will be asking for mercy and I'll be asking myself, "What happened to the day?". It's hazardous, I know, but I"M LOVING IT!

"I'm loving it"...hmmm, that reminds me of the ad campaign for McDonald's. It's for sure that I'm not about to blog on McD's but definitely the newest fast-food chain to hit Singapore (again) and that's Wendy's!

Half Pound Double Beef Burger - $7.85 (inclusive of  fries & soft drink)
Since Wendy's is famous for its "Old Fashioned Hamburgers", of course I had to give their burger a shot right? "just nice for me" - that was the reply I got when I asked the staff how big is the burger. Since I was about her size, I thought - why not?. So when I opened up the wrapper, the size was  just how the staff had described it but with one bite, I found the patties a tad dry. Oh yeah, and sorry about the 1/3 eaten burger pic. I'm not going to show the picture before the burger was bitten because the patties were not SQUARE like what I expected!

Frosty Shake (Strawberry flavour)
I changed the soft drink that came with my Half Pound Double Beef Burger set meal to a Frosty Shake instead and I think I did the right thing. The shake came with a cherry on top (as for my case, the cherry almost sank because I was busy snapping up shots of the other food). One word to sum up the shake - YUMMY. McD's - watch your back on this one!

Fish Fillet Sandwich- $6.25 (inclusive of fries & soft drink)
This was what N ordered. Again, picture shown here is about 1/3 eaten because I'd like to emphasize on the flakiness of the fillet. Tastewise, both of us agreed that it tasted like BK's Big Fish.

Chili - $2.50
Aha! This you seldom see in a fast-food chain but I AM SO GLAD that I ordered it. It's a cup of meaty goodness with lots of beans and veggies too. So, yup, if you're looking for a healthier alternative to fries, opt for this instead. This was my first time trying chili and I think they did a great job in making me a chili fan.

Fried Chicken - $5.50
N+Baby S+me=Gluttony. Sorry about the equation N but you know it's true! Anyway, we were curious to find out how their chicken tasted as compared to the other fried chicken outlets. The chicken that we ordered here (spicy flavour) is pleasingly not too oily and the flesh was quite juicy. I know that how we're all fans of chicken crust and to me, the best chicken crust has got to be from Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits. Wendy's -  you shall be my runner up. Sorry KFC, you're just out of my league.

Kids Meal - $4.70 (inclusive of fries & soft drink)
I ordered this kiddy meal for Baby S and she finished up the entire set. Need I say more?

Kedai Kue Kue

Kedai Kue Kue is best known for its Indonesian delicacies. It's been around in Singapore for quite sometime now but I've never purchased anything from their shelves because unlike Bengawan Solo, their shops are not easy to come by.

Anyway, JJ kept on raving about their 'Soto Betawi'. I was surprised at first because I thought they only sell cakes and cookies. So, she dragged me to Bugis Junction's basement to convince me that the shop has actually transformed itself into a cafe that sells hot meals!

Soto Betawi - $4.90
Typically, the 'Soto Ayam' that most Singaporeans are familiar with is a kind of spicy and aromatic broth which contains chicken meat and you normally eat it with lontong (rice cake) but if you prefer to put noodle instead of lontong, it would then be called 'Mee Soto'. As for the Soto Betawi you see here, they used beef instead of chicken. The broth is slightly thicker too. When I ordered this dish, they asked me if I wanted to have it with rice or just to add glass noodle into the broth. I chose the latter because I wanted to keep it light. My carbo intake had reached its peak for that day!

This was what accompanied the Soto Betawi. I was supposed to top my Soto with 'emping belinjo' (paddy oat crackers) for that bit of crunchiness (their own version of croutons). Squeezed in a bit of lime for that bit of tanginess and of course,  don't forget the sambal for that  spicy kick! To me, this is an amazing dish because the sweetness of the beef and the spiciness of the broth bring out a great taste. This is easily added to my list of favourite dishes!

Nasi Uduk - $5.00 (comes with a choice of drink - iced tea / coffee/ tea)
I don't know what came over me on that day to actually order this "mega-meal" for Baby S. Food-induced stupidity perhaps? Obviously, this is NOT her everyday portion. Anyway, if you're on a shoestring budget and you're as hungry as a flesh-eating zombie, try not to burn your cash on upsized fast-food meals. Have this set meal instead. I'll try and name all of the items (as specific as possible) on the plate starting with the item that's nearest to the fork and spoon and then working clockwise to the rest of them:
  1. 'crispies' - or whatever they're called (I 'm not too sure how they're prepared at KKK but I do know for a fact that it's achieved by deepfrying an item, eg:fish, prawn or any seafood or vegetable that is coated with batter. When the item is cooked, sometimes there will be bits and pieces of the batter left in the pan. These are the 'crispies'.).
  2. kacang ikan bilis (fried peanuts and anchovies mixed with chilli paste)
  3. egg omelette
  4. emping belinjo
  5. begedil (potato pattie)
  6. sambal
  7. rice (most likely to be infused with coconut milk)
 Trust me, it's very filling and it comes with a drink. Tastewise - hmm, not that bad either. Depends on how hungry you are but I have to say this, the sambal is a KILLER (in a good way, that is)!

Local bites: The quest to be a real Singaporean foodie (Pt. 2)

HD, and I went to Tekka Food Centre just now. We felt like having some Indian food. I was hoping that my favourite Briyani stall - Yakader, was opened but by the time we got there, which was around 8pm, of course, the shutters were down. I so badly wanted HD to be a 'Yakader convert' like me but too bad..

However, there was this particular stall which caught HD's eyes. He claimed that since there was a picture of the owner of the stall and our President taken together, it definitely says a lot about the stall! Well, I find it hard to digest his logic but I went ahead and agreed with him anyway. Oh marvelous Yakader, why, why, why are you closed so early? I almost find it hard to hold back my tears but HEY! When they sent HD's Briyani, it didn't look too bad at all!

Dum Briyani (mutton) - $4.00
The portion they served was very generous. Infact, I was quite surprised that they served it on a tray instead of a plate and it only costs $4.00! The Briyani comes with a side of curry gravy in a small bowl and cucumber achar (pickled cucumber). Tastewise - Rice is fluffy, the mutton is tender and the spiciness was just right. I really DO NOT WANT to betray Yakader but I have to admit IT IS ACTUALLY GOOD!

Mee Kuah - $4.00
This was my spur of the moment order. I really had no idea what to have (definitely not Briyani or else I'll have to bear with the guilt trip) so at last I decided to settle for their Mee Kuah. To me, the perfect Mee Kuah should be accompanied with a sunny side up with a runny yolk once you poke through with a fork. This Mee Kuah however, is missing the yolk! Only the egg white was found and that left me disappointed though I must say the gravy was quite satisfyingly tasty...

Local bites: The quest to be a real Singaporean foodie (Pt.1)

Being Singaporeans, we all have the advantage of living together within different ethnic groups. Of course that leads to co-existing with different cultures, religions and best of all, FOOD! Hmm, that kind of struck me...since my blog is mostly about food and being the Singaporean that I am, I SHOULD touch more on local stuff, right?  Besides that, our local eats are just as good as any Western, French, Japanese, etc, cuisine so they ought to get the recognition that they deserve. In fact, just to redeem myself, I'll run out and grab that plate of Fried Char Kway Teow ASAP! Nahhh, kidding. I'll just skip the thought and redeem myself by posting something that's more related to the local palate. Enjoy!

Cheng Tng - $2.00
All thanks to the hot weather and a couple of colleagues who wanted to cool down (and share bits of juicy gossip!) on that 'freakycrazyhumid' Sunday, I finally got to sample probably the best Cheng Tng in Singapore (their words not mine). Anyway, all things cold are nice on a hot day. Even if it's just plain iced water.

Ok, back to the Cheng Tng. Most of the time, when I order cold  Cheng Tng, crushed ice will be used but at this particular stall, they used real ice cubes!  Well, the one I ordered here is the "limited version" kind. For the "full version", you need to add a dollar more and you'll be treated to one of a kind Cheng Tng experience (their words not mine!). Anyway, I'm quite satisfied with what I had on that day. I especially liked the dried persimmon they added into their Cheng Tng (yup, the one I painstakingly scooped with a spoon in one hand while the other hand was holding my mobile phone to snap the picture). Also, I'm in love with the vintage bowls that they use to serve their Cheng Tng. They sure reminded me of my good old childhood days when my Grandma used to serve Quaker Oats in those kind of bowls for my breakfast!

Marble Slab Creamery

It was one of those days that I badly needed a sugar rush and I wanted something that's really sweet and FROZEN. Yes! It was ice-cream that I wanted so badly! Fumbling with my keyboard, I quickly made a quick search on the internet and that was how I ended up with Marble Slab Creamery. The unique part of this dessert place is, you can choose different flavours of ice-cream and they will gladly mix it up for you on a cold marble slab to create a one-of-a-kind dessert according to your preference.


The mouthwatering flavours of ice-creams MSC offers are  freshly made everyday (well, they do claim to have the freshest ice-cream on earth so it has to be true, I supposed).


You can top your ice-cream with nuts, fruits and other types of sprinkles. Oh yes, you can even tell them to mix in your ice-cream with Crunch bars, Kit Kat bars and M&Ms! 

Taadaaa! This is our very own creation (Baby S and mine). It's a combination of Butter Pecan + Mocha. I chose the  'dipped and rolled waffle bowl' (additional $1.30)  and Baby S chose to top the ice-cream with the assorted sprinkles (additional $1.00). All in all we paid $8.30 but it was worth evey penny! I finally had my sugar fix!

By the way, I saw that they have other delicious items on their menu as well such as ice-cream cakes and milk shakes. Well, I'm definitely coming back if my endorphins level is running low again!

Charco's The Flaming Chicken

Sometime ago, I received an email on a new eatery that has just reached our shores which originated from Australia, specialising in grilled chicken . Sad to say, I wasn't interested at all because of its location, which is in a remote part of Ang Mo Kio. Somehow, curiosity and the mood for chicken came upon me and that created a perfect combination for me to try out this eatery.


Sampler Set - $13.90
Since it was the first time having a meal there, I had no clue on what's nice on the menu but lucky for me they offered a Sampler Set. All I can say is that the food was average but that was not the worst part. The part that I got lost while finding the place, now that was the WORST! Anyway, I've tasted better grilled chicken at some other places and would I make a comeback? Yes, perhaps but I'll probably just stick to their salad bar and this time, I'm bringing someone with a better sense of direction than me.

Cafe Le Caire

I was at work and out of a sudden, I had a craving for something exotic, something middle-eastern. I flashed my colleague, N the "I AM CRAVING" look (by the way, she's the only one at work who knew about my food blogging activities). She smiled knowingly and I knew exactly where we were headed to...Cafe Le Caire, here we come!

We were both starving when we got there so we didn't miss a beat when the food arrived (that explains why I didn't have the pics of  the other dishes that we had) . Everything was yummy but surprisingly, the dish that had the greatest impact on me was our last (and the cheapest!) dish that we ordered - Foul Mesdammes.

Foul Mesdammes - $4.50
This chef recommended dish is made from slow-cooked fava beans that has been mashed. It's served with a side of Arabic bread for you to soak it in the rich and flavourful gravy. It's normally eaten for breakfast in Egypt but you can serve me this dish at any time of the day!

Mad Jack Cafe

Why oh why have I always wanted to have a go at this cafe which offers Aussie food but ended up sticking to familiar territory afterwhich I was overwhelmed with regrets. The next time I visit this eatery again, I've made a pact to myself that I should order what they're best known for - their Aussie stuff especially their Blue Mountain Beef Burger!

This is the only dish that didn't come with any regrets on that day. The banana is fried to a crispy perfection and when you eat it together with the vanilla ice-cream...ooo lala...they make a great pair in your mouth!

MFM

This was one of HD's impromptu suggestion to eat at The Manhattan Fish Market. Well, seeing that they were having a Chinese New Year promotion - buy one and get one free Lobster Platter for $28.80 (yes, two for the price of one!), I thought, "Ok, let's go! It's LOBSTER!".

It was the first time HD and I had lobster. I, on the other hand was quite disappointed because the cheese which was melted on top of the lobster was a real killjoy. I think, when cooking seafood. it's best to make it simple so that you can still savour its natural flavours. As for the rest of the items in the platter, suffice to say they were not memorable at all.Fishing Net

Swensen's

Again? Yup, I'll never grow tired of eating at this place. That's because it's really value for money. Furthermore, when I'm eating at this restaurant, I'm not afraid to try out anything on their menu beacause I know I won't be disappointed. Besides, it was my birthday and Swensen's gives you free ice-cream on your birthday! See, that's why I'm SO GOING TO SWENSEN'S!


Deep Fried Mushrooms
YUMMY... succulent mushrooms coated with crunchy breadcrumbs! Whoever's a fan of fungi like me will find these a great treat.

This was something I didn't order but they told me it was a complimentary from them because they took a slightly longer time to serve me the food that I ordered. See, another reason for me to always dine at Swensen's!

Honestly the portion was too big for me and I had a hard time finishing it up especially since I just stuffed myself with the first two dishes!

Aha! Finally my free ice-cream! Actually, this ice-cream is served with a light-up candle but Baby S blew off the candle a bit too quickly before I managed to snap up a good shot of this ice-cream.

2009 REVIEWS Pt 2 (all tried and tested in the month of December)

Hellooo! I'm back and I'm all pumped up to finish my reviews for 2009. It was kind of a hectic week for me but Chinese New Year is just around the corner so I'm really hoping for a long and relaxing weekend. Meanwhile, let's get on with the show, shall we?

Swensen's
17th Dec is Baby S's birthday so I decided to splurge a bit on lunch and gave Baby S a treat at Swensen's before we watch 'Avatar'. Apparently, food was last on her list on that day because she was more interested to watch Avatar than having her lunch. So, the pics I put up here are actually the meal consumed by her parents. By the way, the birthday girl only had some fries and she didn't complain at all...

Clam Chowder in a Sourdough Breadbowl
I'm impressed by the crispiness of the bread. The clam chowder isn't that bad either as they weren't stingy with their clams.

Sourdough 49ers Beef
This is my favourite Swensen's sandwich. The sandwiches may appear rather small but it's definitely enough to make you turn down a dessert. I especially love the beef slices which is cooked in teriyaki sauce and topped with cheddar cheese. Yummy combination!

JJ ate much of it because she was the one who ordered it. I had a few bite and it tasted OK.


Chicken Cornish
'cornish' means: any of English breed of domestic fowl often crossbred to produce roasters. I wonder if they really use the original cornish chickens to make this dish? Anyway, it looks similiar to the traditional Malay 'epok-epok' but the taste is totally different. Both the pastry and fillings are kind of sweet, in fact, a bit too sweet for my liking and that was the reason why I couldn't finish it. I much prefer epok-epok's fillings which is spicier and it's normally made up of either curried minced beef+potato or sardines cooked with chillies and onions. The epok-epok is normally deep-fried to crispiness but this dish is baked so it's less oily. It is also bigger than an epok-epok.

Spaghetti Marinara
Despite the crayfish and the rest of the seafood in this dish, it is not a memorable dish for me. Probably there's something about the colour which is so sickeningly orange. Even my nephew who's a 'pasta freak' had a hard time finishing this dish so I can tell it wasn't that fantastic.


 Lamb Shank
I have to say, this dish is the best dish out of all the rest that we had at Secret Recipe on that day. No doubt it lives   up to its name of being the signature dish. The lamb is cooked to perfection and the gravy is rich and flavourful. Total awesomeness! This dish comes with a small bun and mashed potato and if you can spot a candle in the picture, that doesn't have anything to do with the dish AT ALL.

Their kiddy meal for Baby S, mini chicken burgers and 'astronomical fries'. Although the chicken patties are small but they are surprisingly tasty!

Phew! Finally I'm done with my reviews for '09. I'm looking forward to put up more stuff and let's hope I'll be a more hardworking blogger in 2010!
